AFC/ABC launch unique interactive broadband game

26 June 2006

Demonstrating another outstanding industry collaboration, the Australian Film Commission and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation today launch Chiko Accidental Alien, an animated interactive online children's game at abc.net.au/chiko.

The project is the fifth to be launched from a slate funded under the AFC and ABC New Media and Digital Services Broadband Production Initiative (BPI), and is the first broadband interactive game to be produced from the BPI.

"The launch of Chiko Accidental Alien, with its extraordinary artistic and technical merits, brings yet more innovative, high quality content to the online environment," said Lynley Marshall, Director of ABC New Media & Digital Services.

"Content of this calibre provides the greatest incentive for Australian households to continue their uptake of high speed internet connections."

"The BPI is a trailblazing initiative that is successfully creating new production models and forging new professional partnerships in the development of Australian digital content. This latest completed project is an outstanding example of the potential of the online environment to deliver Australian ideas and innovation to audiences," said AFC Acting Chief Executive Chris Fitchett.

Infused with humour that will entice game lovers of all ages, Chiko Accidental Alien immerses players in a rich narrative-driven animated environment. The multi-level game-play follows the adventures of an inquisitive thirteen-year-old boy, Chiko, as he finds himself at the controls of a spacecraft en route to a fun park on the far-off peanut-shaped planet of Squerx.

Chiko Accidental Alien is an INDIGO Digital Production created by Stephane Zerbib, with game visuals designed by Nathan Jurevicius. Chiko Accidental Alien was developed and financed by the Australian Film Commission in association with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation under the BPI.

The BPI is an initiative aimed at encouraging and supporting highly experienced film and television practitioners to team up with experienced new media producers to produce interactive broadband programs for delivery via ABC Online and ABC Television.
